3 Words for 2020: Create, New, Rest

I cannot believe 2019 is over.

I have such mixed emotions on the year, but in short, I’m glad it’s over.

2019 really tested me mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. There were really high highs and really low lows.

People entered my life and others left it.

I had to trust God’s timing is perfect and learned to be okay in not knowing what was coming next.

I accomplished some of my goals, and failed at others.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can watch my 2019 one-second everyday challenge here.

Up and down, up and down, and now 2019 has come to a close and a new decade, and a new year, has arrived.

2020.

What a year it will be, whatever it has in store.

When I was trying to decide on my words for 2020, I couldn’t think of any at first. I’ve been struggling with writer’s block lately (I’m sure you can tell), mostly because I’ve been too mentally exhausted to think of anything else except the routines and going through the motions.

The Christmas season was an encouraging and much-needed time to step away from the hustle and really focus and reset. I didn’t realize how much I craved the time spent with friends and family until we were in the midst of the holidays. It truly warmed my soul.

As 2019 drew to a close, I began thinking more about what I wanted 2020 to look like, knowing what I know, and not knowing what God has planned next.

As I brainstormed, I realized three words kept coming to mind when I thought about entering the New Year…

Create. New. Rest.

CREATE.

CREATE is my first word for 2020. I love to create and I want 2020 to be filled with creating, in every sense of the word.

Create memories (and capture them).

Create blog posts and other forms of art.

Create meals (a.k.a., I want to cook more).

Create a home that is welcoming, organized, and full of love and laughter.

Whatever Create means in 2020, I want to embrace those opportunities when they come.

NEW.

NEW is my second word for 2020. Not only are we in a new year, but we’re also in a new decade. This year, there are going to be many new things that happen in our life.

I’m a creature of habit, and new things make me feel uncomfortable. However, I know that I have to do new things in order to grow and learn so reminding myself to do new things — and embrace change — will be a main goal for this year.

Not to mention I want to challenge myself to read 50 books (check out the progress here), run more miles, and push myself to do more things that challenge me in every sense of the word.

REST.

Finally, REST is my third word for 2020. I realized in 2019 that REST is necessary, but not just physical rest. I also crave spiritual rest, mental rest, and emotional rest.

I recently wrote a post called “Be Still” because I was gripped by the truth that God wants us to REST and be still in Him. He will fight for us and He is there to comfort us in our fatigue.

In 2019, I spent a lot of nights restless with anxiety. I struggled with finding mental rest, which then affected me physically. I don’t want to bring that into 2020.

I’m so excited for 2020. The year is off to an encouraging and positive start and for that, I am thankful. I’m eager to see what God has in store for this year and what will happen in and through our lives. I can’t wait to share how this year goes and what God does with my words of the year.
