7 Transitional Pieces You Need in Your Fall Wardrobe

This may come as a shock, but I’m a huge fan of all things fall. Call me basic, but I love a chilly day curled up with a good book and soup simmering in the crock pot.

Plus I love pumpkin spice coffee. But that’s a given.

As much as I love fall, we’re not quite there yet. Sure, decorating for fall is a-okay in my book right now but it’s not exactly sweater weather. This week it’s been in the high 70s so I tried to wear a fall outfit and ended up changing almost immediately since I was too warm! As much as I love all the layers, I’ll have to wait a bit longer before unpacking my favorite fall items.

This time of year can be a bit awkward when it comes to styling. That’s why it’s the perfect time to slowly transition your summer wardrobe to your fall wardrobe. There are a few key items that help me swap from wearing tank tops, shorts and sandals almost every day to pants, long sleeves, and boots.

Here are 7 fall transition staples that are the real MVPs in my closet right now.

{ONE} Casual black dress

You can never go wrong with a black dress. It’s easy to dress up (with heels and jewelry) or down (flats and a cardigan). During the summer, I wear my black swing dress from Old Navy with colorful heels and a bright bag, but transitioning to fall, I tend to wear it with flats, a cardigan, and a scarf if needed. You could also pair it with a light jean jacket.

{TWO} Jean Jacket

I love a good ol’ jean jacket. I have this one from Old Navy that is perfect for pairing with a more summery outfit. For example, pairing your summery top with dark denim, a jean jacket, and flats is a great go-to outfit to get more wear out of it.

{THREE} Cardigan

While you may not be reaching for a cardigan throughout the summer, a cardigan is a must-have for summer-to-fall transition. By adding a cardigan, you can continue to wear your summer dresses or tops without feeling too exposed or under-dressed.

{FOUR} Autumn-colored T-shirts

Although you may not be reaching for your sweaters and scarves just yet, you can still rock the fall colors. My favorites are burgundy, olive green, mustard, and navy. I have several T-shirts and tank tops in these colors so I can wear them for multiple seasons. I recommend getting solid-colored basics whenever possible so you can wear them time and time again without growing tired of a pattern or print.

{FIVE} Jumpsuit

Similar to a black dress, a jumpsuit is another item that I tend to grab more in seasons of transition. It is an effortless way to dress up or down depending on your needs. I have multiple jumpsuits that I could wear to work with heels or nice flats and then dress down with a jacket or cardigan.

{SIX} Essie nail polish

Nail polish is a simple accessory that can pull an outfit all together. I’ve been loving Essie’s “Mrs. Always Right” color (shown below) and find that it’s a perfect shade of pink for this time of year.

{SEVEN} Statement shoes

You know I love my leopard print, so I love adding a pop of leopard whenever I can, especially if the rest of my outfit is pretty understated or neutral. Lately I’ve found myself opting for my leopard print booties from Target or my white Vans.
