My Favorite Easy Ways To Beat the Winter Blues
I’m writing this cozy on my couch as it’s snowing outside, so this feels right. We’re in the midst of winter with the holidays behind us and spring seemingly far away.
We’re in it, people. Winter is here and if you’re feeling like I am, you’re starting to feel the winter blues.
Now, when I say “winter blues,” I am not talking about seasonal depression or anything medical. I’m talking about the feeling of “blah,” when it’s too cold to be outside, too grey, and life feels a little monotonous and same-old, same-old.
Of course, getting enough sleep and taking care of your mental health is important. Along with that, here are my eight favorite things I’m intentionally integrating into my routine to beat the winter blues.
Candles. Unscented or scented, whatever your preference. Candles evoke warm, cozy energy and calming light into a space. I love lighting them at night to set the vibe, especially now that our holiday decor is packed away.
Warm blankets. Perfect for cozying up with a good book, adding texture and warmth to a space, and also (quite literally) staying warm this winter.
Cozy hobbies. I tend to gravitate towards “cozy” hobbies in the wintertime, like reading, coloring, or crafting. Other ideas include: watching movies, knitting or embroidery, puzzles, and cooking/baking.
Early mornings. It’s hard to leave my bed when it’s cold outside, but rising early and having a quite morning makes the day feel longer since the sun sets so early.
Movement. Even though it’s cold, movement is key to combatting the winter blues. It doesn’t have to be intense, but finding creative and warm ways to still move your body helps immensely.
Warm beverages. Winter is a great “excuse” to enjoy warm beverages, like tea, hot chocolate, and coffee (of course). Try creating twists on your classic go-tos by experimenting with different creamers, teas, or mix-ins.
Fun playlists. I always love a good playlist, but I’ve noticed I tend to listen to more music and playlists in the wintertime. it helps pass the time and, again, set the cozy vibe indoors. Depending on my mood or activity, the playlist varies. A few favorites: Luke’s Diner in the Wintertime on YouTube, calm mornings on Spotify, any type of lo-fi beats playlist, music set to a wintery scene on YouTube (so many options!).
Scheduling fun time. I try to be even more intentional with scheduling “fun” and social time during the winter months. Grab coffee, go thrifting, or invite friends over for a movie or game night. It not only is great for your mental health to be around other people but having plans to look forward to can help break up the monotony of long winter days.
