Finding the Little Joys in Everyday Life

It’s around this time of year that the murmurs of fall begin to appear.

Stores start selling fall decor. Dunkin’ announces that pumpkin is back. Bath & Body Works sells their fall candles with limited-time scents.

We’re in mid-August, yet the season of school, football, and all things fall is quickly approaching. The start of a new chapter.

It’s easy to get lost in the rush of busyness, hurrying to the next thing, striving for the next goal.

Don’t get me wrong. I love all things fall. I love fall decor, pumpkin-flavored anything, and apple cider-scented candles.

But in this transition between lazy summer days and the routine of fall activities, I’m trying to find the little joys in everyday life. The little moments that get lost if you’re not looking for them.

Truly, I try to do this all year round, but it’s recently been in the forefront of my mind as the days quickly fly by and I stare at the calendar at the almost end of August. (How is it almost September already?!)

So, today I’m sharing a few of the little joys I’ve discovered this week:

  • The sound of brewing coffee in the morning.

  • Lucy getting excited to see me come down the stairs even though she sees me all day, every day.

  • The feeling of checking off the first work task of the day.

  • Listening to a familiar playlist as I prepare for the workday ahead.

  • Sitting in a coffee shop and being immersed in that atmosphere.

  • Going for a walk around our neighborhood and seeing other families do the same.

  • Feeling Baby kick at the most random times throughout the day.

  • Laughing and chatting on the couch with a friend.

  • Lighting a candle and watching the flames flicker rhythmically.

  • Chopping vegetables as we prepare a home-cooked meal.

  • Eating dinner with Luke at the table without our phones and hearing about his day.

  • Drinking hot tea with honey to wind down for the evening.

  • Reading on the couch and having Lucy curl in my lap and fall asleep.

These are not extraordinary things. These are the little things that happen every day, in the “mundane” moments of life. They are the moments that can pass us by if we’re distracted, hurrying, and leaping ahead to the next season.

So, I encourage you to take a moment and identify the little joys that may be quietly happening all around you. There are so many more than you might think if you simply pause to take it all in. As we anticipate the next season and strive to not become overwhelmed with all we have to do, let’s take a moment to find the little joys that are happening all around us. Right here, right now.
